12 Jyotirlingas of India – live Darshan 


There are 12 Jyotirlingas is a shrine where Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of a Jyotirlingam or “Lingam of light.” There are twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India as per Shiva Purana. They materialized in a radiant form. The thirteenth pinda is known as the Kalpinda. The pinda (Subtle body) which has crossed the limits of Kal (Time), is known as Kalpinda. The names of twelve Jyotirlingas are provided ahead. It is believed that those who visit these Jyotirlinga Temples, attain Salvation and Enlightenment. Originally it is believed to have 64 Jyotirlingas out of which 12 Jyotirlingas are regarded as most auspicious and holy. They are mentioned as follow:



1. Somnath:

Site: Prabhasapattan, near Veraval, Sourashtra, Gujarat 12 Jyotirlingas This is the oldest and most important Jyotirlinga in Saurashtra (Gujarat). This Jyotirlinga is also described in the Rig Veda. It is said about the Somnath temple that this temple was first built by Chandradev with gold and then by Ravana with silver. After Ravana, Lord Krishna made it with sandalwood sticks, and then Bhimdev made it out of stone. Shravan darshan Somnath temple. Supriya, an innocent Shiva devotee, was imprisoned by a demon named Daska. Accommodation near Somanath Jyothirling Temple: There are no good accommodation facilities available near this temple. 2. Mallikarjun:

Site: Shrishailya, Andhra Pradesh 12 Jyotirlingas Sreesalam Jyotirlinga is located in the Mallikarjun temple on the banks of Krishna river in the Coonoor district of Andhra Pradesh. An entire chapter in the Skanda Purana describes the glory of this Jyotirlinga. There is an ancient story about the Mallikarjun temple according to which Sivagan Nandi did penance here. Pleased with their penance, Lord Shiva and Parvati appeared to them in the form of Mallikarjuna and Brahmarambha. This Jyotirlinga is also described in the Mahabharata. 3. Mahakaleshwar:

Site: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh 12 Jyotirlingas Located in Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), this Jyotirlinga is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga. That is why this Jyotirlinga has the highest mythological and tantric significance. This Jyotirlinga is also spontaneous. A true devotee of Mahakal Jyotirlinga is never in danger of death or disease. In fact, Mahakal Jyotirlinga is worshiped as a deity as well as the king of Ujjain. He is also revered as the king of Avantika in the story of Uddhav. The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is beautifully described in the works of great poets like Puranas, Mahabharata, and Kalidasa. Being spontaneous, glorious, and south-facing, Mahakaleshwar Mahadev has a very virtuous significance. It is believed that Moksha can be attained only by seeing this Jyotirlinga. 4. Omkareshwar / Amaleshwar:
Site: Omkar, Mandhata, Madhya Pradesh 12 Jyotirlingas Located in Madhya Pradesh, this Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located on the banks of the river Narmada. There are two temples of Lord Shiva at this place- Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. It is said that the temple was torn in two by the prayers of the gods. Shravan darshan Omkareshvar temple. The peculiarity of Omkareshwar is that the mountain here appears in the shape of Om. Along with this Narmada river also appears to be flowing in the shape of Om. There are also many legends associated with Omkareshwar. It is said that Shankaracharya’s guru lived in a cave at Omkareshwar. The popular Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple is located in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, at a distance of about 67 km from Maheshwar, 76 Km from Khandwa & 80 km from Indore. This temple is situated on the banks of the Narmada River.



5. Baidyanath:
Site: Baidyanathdham, Jharkhand 12 Jyotirlingas This Jyotirlinga is located at a place called Deodhar in Jharkhand. Many people also call this Baidyanath. The temple is the house of the gods. Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is located here, hence the name Devghar. This Jyotirlinga is a Siddhapeeth. It is said that the wishes of everyone who comes here are fulfilled. This gender is also called the working gender.

6. Bhimshankar:
Site: Dakini region, Taluka Khed, District Pune, Maharashtra 12 Jyotirlingas Bhimshankar Jyotirlinga is located on the banks of the river Bhamvati near Pune in Maharashtra. The popular story about this Jyotirlinga is as follows. The demon named Tripurasur used to annoy the Sahyadri and the people around him with his demonic powers. To get rid of this demon, Lord Shankara appeared here in the form of Bhimakaya and after defeating Tripurasura in battle, due to the insistence of the devotees, he appeared there in the form of Jyotirlinga. It is believed that the river Bhimvati was born from the sweat that came out of Lord Shankar’s body during the war. Shravan darshan Bima Shankar temple. 7. Rameshwar Jyotirlinga:
Site: Setubandh, near Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu 12 Jyotirlingas This Jyotirlinga is located on the shores of the sea in Tamil Nadu. Here Shriram worshiped Lord Shankara. Lord Rama worshiped Shiva in the temple as there was no sin in the war with Ravana. Rameshwar is one of the important pilgrimage sites of Hinduism.

8. Nageshvara Jyotirlinga:
Site: Gujarat: Nagheshwar Jyotirlinga, Gujarat 12 Jyotirlingas Nageshvara Jyotirlinga temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India, located in Nageshvara near Dwaraka in the State of Gujarat. This temple is believed to be the first Jyotirlingas on the earth.

9. Vishweshwar:
Site: Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. 12 Jyotirlingas Varanasi is an ancient city in India. The Vishwanath Temple here is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. This temple has been located here for over a thousand years. Kashi Vishwanath has a special significance in Hinduism. Moksha is attained by visiting this temple once and bathing in the holy river Ganga. Every man wants to come here once in a lifetime. Shankaracharya, Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayanand, Tulsidas, etc. have arrived to visit this temple.



10. Trimbakeshwar:
Site: Near Nashik, Maharashtra 12 Jyotirlingas The Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga in Nashik (Maharashtra) consists of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. This is the great feature of this Jyotirlinga. Of all the other Jyotirlingas, only Lord Shiva is seated. Situated on the banks of Godavari river, this Trimbakeshwar temple is made of black stones. The architecture of the temple is wonderful. 11. Kedarnath:
Site: Uttarakhand, Himalayas 12 Jyotirlingas Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is one of the most visited among (12) Jyotirlingas and is the holiest pilgrimage place for Hindus, Located near the River Mandakini in Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal). Kedarnath Temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century AD. Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya is located behind the Kedarnath temple. Jyotirlingam in Kedarnath is called as Lord Kedareshwar. This Jyotirlinga is not opened throughout the year. Kedarnath Jyotirlingam Temple remains open during May and October every year. This Temple is covered with Snow for six months in a year. Kedarnath temple is situated in a hillock of about 11500 feet above the mean sea level. One has to go only by road to reach this temple. It is situated about 230Km from Rishikesh & 250Km from Dehradun. Nearest airport – Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (about 240 km from Kedarnath). 12. Grishneshwar:
Site: Verul, District Aurangabad, Maharashtra 12 Jyotirlingas The temple of Dhrishneshwar Mahadev is located 11 km from Daulatabad near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. This temple is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Many people also know this by the name of Dhrishmeshwar. The famous caves of Ellora, built by Buddhist monks, are also located near this temple. This temple was built by Goddess Ahalyabai Holkar. Away from the city, this temple is full of simplicity. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the ancient Pilgrimage Destinations of India and is the twelfth (last) Jyotirlingas on the Earth. This temple is situated at a distance of 15 Kms from Daulatabad and 30 km from Aurangabad.

सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथं च श्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम्।
उज्जयिन्यां महाकालमोङ्कारममलेश्वरम्॥
